  • DShan · 4 months ago
    Oh, I won't. That's coming soon. Hint: I never won a national
    championship.

"Not winning hurts a lot worse than whatever I have to do to win."
Epic! I've hit the post on SO MANY penalty shots. Of course, never to the stakes you were at, but still. POSTS.
Also, old journals are funny to read.
  • DShan · 3 months ago
    Old journals are a TRIP:)

Oh, and the shot was saved. Wish I'd hit the post, actually.
  • doniree · 4 months ago
Wow, D that's intense. I think it's good to go back and look at old journals like that, to remember feelings like that - as painful and intense as they may be - and then to acknowledge where you're at 10 years later.
  • DShan · 3 months ago
Intense, yes. Things seem unsurvivable sometimes, when they really aren't.

I know this feeling all too well. Ive been involved in many similar situations during sporting events, quiz bowl tourneys, and the like. Sometimes I've won, and other times I've lost. And I must admit, it DOES hurt a lot more to lose when victory is soooo close.
  • DShan · 3 months ago
Very true...the distance between victory and defeat matters. Losing something you almost won is far tougher than losing something you lost by long measure.

WOW DShan!! "I am never going to say that again if it kills me. Not winning hurts a lot worse than whatever I have to do to win."

An athletes mind is so powerful.

It's always interesting to go back and read past journal entries, especially the heated pages. Sometimes the exact same emotions begin to feel so real again. Amazing. Honest. Thank you.

I am looking forward to the follow up!! :0)

You should know...you're an athlete too! And married to a professional! I wonder...do you two get into competitive modes over trivial stuff? Not in the bad way, but in the playful, challenge each other way.

    Yes, and I win every.single.time. {LOL I kid, I kid} ......

I hope everything is going great with you! Happy Thursday....geerrr actually on that note, I woke up think morning practically doing cartwheels thinking it was Friday....and then reality set in. :)
  • DShan · 3 months ago
Hahaha. You seem like the cartwheel type, actually:)

And I have no doubt that you win every time. Every. Time.
  • Iva · 3 months ago
hahaha. I'll take that. Thanks! :)

I remember being a freshman in HS and somehow making the varsity team. The first time I got some PT that year I was chosen to kick a PK that would give us the lead. My first shot I kicked right at the goalie, the rebound I kicked right at the goalie, that rebound ended up being put in the net by an older teammate. He didn't say anything to me after, just patted me on the back and gave me the "shit happens" look.

your story reminded me of my own. Albeit on an incredibly smaller and much less significant scale than yours haha.
  • DShan · 3 months ago
Haha...that's pretty similar, actually. I went through that in highschool too...I was always a terrible penalty kick taker, and as a Frosh I proved that one too many times. Most teammates loved it; I was great on the field and just miserable when it was just me and the goalie.

I must learn how to get into these sports, pick some teams. I am interested but don't know where to start... I have no male influences.
  • DShan · 3 months ago
Haha. Pick the Chicago teams!! And find your male influences online! :)

Oh man, this makes me want to start blogging some of my old journal entries but... I don't think the world's ready for that nonsense.

PS I was totally in that position once, goddamn penalty and stress.
